Voices in the Darkness, an important new exhibition that explores the impact of the Holocaust on the arts and culture, opens at the Norton Center. The project looks not only at the dark shadow of the Holocaust but also the triumphs of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Over the year, incredible performances, lectures by guest speakers and a film series will focus on the Holocaust. A number of Norton Center performances, beginning with the Warsaw Philharmonic on October 27, will relate to the Holocaust. Of particular interest is the performance on Monday, November 15 by the Hawthorne String Quartet, an ensemble dedicated to the performance of works by composers who were victims of the Holocaust. In March, the Norton Center will join with the Centre College Music and Theatre Programs and Danville's West T. Hill Community Theatre to present Brundibar, the opera that the Nazis forced the children of the Terezín ghetto to perform as a propaganda vehicle to demonstrate to International Red Cross inspectors the "pleasant and humane" conditions of the concentration camp. Contact or visit Norton Center for a list of activities related to Voices in the Darkness.
