From April 24-27, 2008, a national touring exhibition called The Wall That Heals will visit the Norton Center for the Arts. This Exhibition was created by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund to travel to communities across the United States. Featuring a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., it is also accompanied by a mobile museum that tells the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the era. A computerized Information Center also allows visitors to search for information about those named on the Memorial. The accompanying mobile museum features a map of Vietnam, a chronology of the war, and related information that helps explain the conflict to the generations of Americans born in the intervening years. The Exhibition will bring the experience of Vietnam to your students and will provide a rare opportunity for them to gain a heightened awareness of the impact and legacy of the Vietnam War. The 250-foot replica will be installed on the lawn of the Norton Center and along with the mobile museum, will be open to the public at no charge. This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Memorial’s construction in the nation's capital. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial (widely known as The Wall) opened to the public in Washington in 1982, becoming a symbol of national healing and recognition of veterans from that war. The touring replica is complete with the 58,249 names of those killed or missing in action from the conflict. The Wall is the most visited memorial in America. A curriculum of comprehensive resources, including a teachers' guide, video, posters, and other resources will be made available upon request. Like The Wall That Heals, Echoes From The Wall, (a teachers guide), goes beyond the history of the Vietnam War and encourages students to examine the lessons of that chaotic period.
