Norton Center Salutes: Sodexo

Over the past 10 years, Sodexo / Centre College Dining Services have sponsored many events on the Centre campus and have donated thousands of meals to the Danville community. Yearly, the dining team has done 2 events to enlighten the Centre community about hunger issues that exist in Danville and Boyle County.

In September of each year, Share our Strength – No Kid Hungry has recently been a partner with Sodexo at Centre College with the goal to raise awareness about childhood hunger in our community. Through culinary events, soliciting donations, using social media and having informational displays, Sodexo has been able to donate almost 3,000 meals to local charities in Boyle County.

In April and May the dining services team holds their annual Servathon on the Centre Campus. Employees donate time by volunteering at local shelters and pantries, giving money from pay roll deductions and host a campus canned food drive in Cowan Dining Hall. Close to 6,000 meals have been donated or funded over the past few years.

New in 2016, Sodexo has added another community partner to work with, Families First. Families First is a Danville Schools Family Resource Center. They offer many services and programs that include In-school mentoring assistance, health services or health service referrals and parenting education programs. They also support a Backpack Feeding Program that will be the focus of the Sodexo dining services team. The Backpack Program provides nutritious and easy-to-prepare foods for K-12 students that are food insecure. The backpacks are put together with the assistance of local food banks, churches and volunteers and supply enough food for a student to eat on the weekend.

“To get involved with this program felt like a natural fit for our dining team.” says Mike Nagorka, General Manager of Sodexo for Centre College Dining Services. “When students don’t have to worry about a basic need like food, they can put their energies into what is important and be successful at learning and studying.”

In addition to volunteering for the Backpack Program, Nagorka and the dining team applied for and received a $1,000 grant from the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, that was created with the mission to ensure that every child in the United States grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead a healthy, productive life. “The grant will be a helpful financial addition to help fund this important program.” says Nagorka.

We invite the entire Danville community to visit us in any of our dining facilities on the Centre Campus. If you happen to come in September, April or May we encourage you to help out our community by making a donation to one of our hunger initiatives.
