Norton Center Salutes: First Southern National Bank
The First Southern story began in 1982 when Jess Correll, then 26 years old and living in Somerset, Kentucky, sought advice from a local business consultant and former State Banking Commissioner, Randy Attkisson, about how to buy a bank in Stanford, Kentucky. With little cash down and a guarantee from family members, Jess got a loan to close the purchase of Lincoln County National Bank in 1983. Over the next 33 years, the bank has grown into a much more diversified financial institution investing in commercial real estate, a life insurance company, in addition to acquiring several community banks in Central and Western Kentucky.
In the early 90s First Southern National Bank’s leaders experienced a dramatic shift in course in the way they conducted business. Board Members went through a small group Bible study for the first time, Crown Financial Ministries, learning the Biblical perspective of money. The impact of the study was profound, completely and forever changing the way the bank’s leaders operated the business and as it shaped their view of stewardship.
In 2006, the bank’s leaders formalized a purpose statement and set of core values. Team members were polled, ideas were polished and a plan was made for the future of the bank. From these efforts came a strategic plan, and a more firm grasp on the bank’s purpose, mission and values.
First Southern team members recognize they have been given an opportunity to use their example, their influence and their resources to help others make wise financial decisions and their desire is to do just that. In fact, encouraging others to give generously, save regularly and to spend wisely has been part of the bank’s philosophy for many years.
In 2013, First Southern introduced a financial health initiative called True Balance®. Since then, the bank has been offering free True Balance® resources to customers and non-customers, including personal budget coaching, reading resources, access to videos, financial calculators and more. The initiative has proven to be an excellent resource for those who wish to improve their overall financial health.
The bank’s passion for building a great company has never been stronger. They continue to refine their strategies to fit an ever-evolving industry, while holding true to small town roots.
First Southern offers a robust lineup of products and services, including state of the art online and mobile banking services, while continuing to take pride in delivering more than is expected to each customer and visitor. After all, people bank with people, and First Southern customers are served by some of the best in the business.
Since 1982, First Southern has grown to over $850 million in assets with 18 bank branches in 11 Kentucky counties, including locations in Caldwell, Fayette, Garrard, Jessamine, Lincoln, Logan, Madison, Muhlenberg, Pulaski, Warren and Wayne Counties.
First Southern’s home office is still in Stanford, population 3,000. Regardless of the never-ending potential for change and growth within the banking industry and the communities they serve, First Southern leaders vow to never forget where they came from.
